About the Zine

What is Scoutaroo?

Scoutaroo is a self-published activity book that is 100% hand-drawn by me, Ciara! I'm inspired by the things I loved as a child and by the sense of curiosity and desire to explore that all children naturally have. It's my hope that Scoutaroo fosters that creative exploration to help children learn and grow.

Each issue has a theme; all of the activities in every issue are about that theme, and there are fun facts found throughout every zine which kids can use to decode the secret password to gain access to the clubhouse, where they can find bonus content, answers to the activities, and more!

Who are you?

My name is Ciara Barsotti. I'm an artist living in Virginia who has always loved kid stuff and activity books. My husband and I don't have any kids... yet. But we have nieces and nephews who are a constant source of inspiration and imagination! Here's a link to more of my work.

How It All Started

The idea for Scoutaroo started way back when my mom was a kid... she would make "magazines" for her kid sister, releasing new issues full of hilarious and fun activities which kept them both entertained. Fortunately for all of us, she saved every single one, and shared them with me when I was little. I was captivated. I started making them for my little brother, and then when he grew out of it, for my little cousins. Now, I'm making Scoutaroo for everyone!

Frequently Asked Questions

I am planning on releasing 10 issues in 2018, and hope to release an issue every month in 2019.

What age group is Scoutaroo intended for?

Early readers through 5th or 6th grade. Younger kids may need help with instructions, but an older sibling is a great resource for this!
